形容詞・副詞で表される内容には程度の差があり、ここから比較というものが出てきます。形容詞・副詞には原級・比較級・最上級の3つの形があり、この変化を比較変化と言います。比較変化には語尾に-er, -estをつけたり、前にmore, mostをつけたりする規則的変化と不規則的変化があります。
①原級の語尾に-er, -estがつく：1音節の語と少数の2音節の語。

①一般的なもの
good/well―better―best, bad/ill―worse―worst, many/much―more―most, little―less―lest,
②意味によって変化が変わるもの
late(遅い、遅れた)―later(時)/latter(順序)―latest/last,
old―older(年取った)/elder(長幼の順)―oldest/eldest,
far(遠くに、はるかに)―farther(空間の隔たり)/further(時間・数量・程度の隔たり)―farthest/furthest
as＋原級＋asの形で、2つの事柄の程度が「同等である(ない)」ことを表します。
①as～as＝…と同じくらい～。not as(so) as＝…ほど～でない。
His brother has as many as(＝no less than、～も＜多く＞の) three medals.(彼の兄は3個もメダルを持っている。)
②as～as…can, as～as possible＝できるだけ～。
He borrowed as many books as he could.(彼はできるだけ多くの本を借りた。)
③…times as～as＝倍数表現(の…倍の～)。
Horses can run three times as fast as men.(馬は人間の3倍の速さで走ることができる。)
This country is about twice as large as in area as Japan.(この国は面積が日本の約2倍ある。)
I am half as old as my brother.(私の年齢は母の半分である。)
My income is a third(two-thirds) as large as yours.(私の収入は君の3分の1＜3分の2＞だ。)
④not so much A as B＝not A so much as B＝B rather than A＝AよりもむしろB。
He is not so much a writer as a journalist.＝He is a journalist rather than a writer.(彼は作家というよりはむしろジャーナリストである。)
比べる2つの事柄の間に差がある場合に用いられ、強調する場合にはその前にmuch, (by) far, a little等を用い、veryは用いません。
①比較級＋than
The population of Osaka is larger than that of Kobe.(大阪の人口は神戸よりも多い。)
②less～than＝劣等比較、…ほど～ない。口語ではよくnot as～asで代用します。
My plan is less interesting than yours.＝My plan is not as(so) interesting as yours.(私の計画はあなたの計画ほどおもしろくない。)
③Which(Who)～＋比較級, A or B？＝AとBではどちらがいっそう…か。
Who is heavier, Tom or Jack?(トムとジャックではどちらがより重いか。)
④thanの代わりにtoを取るもの(ラテン語系比較級)：junior(年下の)、senior(年上の)、inferior(劣った)、superior(優れた)。
In quality, this one is far superior to that.(質では、これの方があれよりもずっと優れている。)
⑤比較級の慣用句
(1)no more～than…＝…でないのと同様に～でない(no moreの後には名詞のほか、形容詞・動詞等も来ます)。
A whale is no more than a fish than a horse (is).(クジラは馬と同じく魚でない。A horse is a fish.という事実性がゼロであるのに比較して、A whale is a fish.の事実性が少しも多くない＜no more＞という発想です。「～でない」程度が同じということです。)
(2)no less～than…＝…と同様に～である。
A whale is no less a mammal than a horse (is).(クジラは馬と同じくほ乳動物である。A horse is a mammal.の事実性が真であるのに比較して、A whale is a mammal.の事実性が少しも少なくない＜no less＞という発想です。「～である」程度が同じということです。)
(3)no more than＝only、～しかない。
He is no more than ten years old.(彼は10歳にすぎない。)
(4)not more than＝at most、せいぜい。
He is not more than ten years old.(彼はせいぜい10歳でしかない。)
(5)no less than＝as many(much) as、～もある。
He paid no less than one hundred dollars.(彼は100ドルも支払った。)
(6)not less than＝at least、少なくとも～はある。
He paid not less than one hundred dollars.(彼は少なくとも100ドルは支払った。)
(7)much(still) more＝なおさら～する(肯定文に用いられます)。
They rob, much still more cheat each other.(彼らは互いに盗み合いをする。だまし合うくらいはなおさらのことだ。)
(8)much(still) less＝なおさら～ない(否定文に用いられます)。
He does not know English, much less German.(彼は英語を知らない、ドイツ語はなおさらのことだ。)
(9)no longer＝not～any longer、もはや～ない。
He is no longer a mere child.(彼はもはや子供ではない。)
(10) the＋比較級～, the＋比較級…＝程度が比例的に変化していくことを表します(～するにつれてますます)。
The sooner, the better.(早ければ早いほどよい。)
(11) 比較級＋and＋比較級＝程度が次第に増大、または減少していくことを表します(だんだん～、次第に～)。
The wind blew harder and harder.(風が次第に激しく吹いた。)
(12)all the＋比較級＋for(because)＝…ので(それだけ)いっそう～(比較の理由を述べる句が続きます)。
I like him all the better for his shyness.(私は彼がはにかみ屋だから、かえっていっそう好きだ。)
3つ以上のものを比較し、「最も～」の意味を表わします。最上級を強める語句としてはmuch, by far, possibleなどが用いられます。
①(the)最上級＋of＋複数名詞(あるいはin＋単数名詞)＝…の中で最も～だ(形容詞の最上級にはtheをつけますが、副詞の最上級にはつけないことも多いです）。
You are the most skillful rower of the three.(3人の中で君が一番上手な漕ぎ手だ。)
②one of the＋最上級＋複数名詞＝最も～なものの一つ。
He is one of the best composers in Japan.(彼は日本で最もすぐれた作曲家の一人だ。)
③the second(third)＋最上級＝第2番目(3番目)に最も～な。
The lake is the second deepest in this country.(この湖はこの国で2番目に深い。＝the deepest lake but one)
③the＋最上級＋(that＋)完了形＝今までに…したことがないほどの。
He is the greatest poet that has ever lived.(彼は今までにいないような大詩人だ。)
④最上級を含む慣用句
not in the lest(少しも～ない)
least of all(とりわけ～でない)
for the most part(大部分は)
at (the) most(せいぜい)
make the most of(～をできるだけ利用する)
at one’s best(最もよい状態で)
at (the) best(せいぜい)
make the best of (～をできるだけ無駄なく利用する)
do one’s best(最善を尽くす)
【比較級による最上級表現と原級による最上級表現】
最上級は比較級を使って、比較級＋than any other～や否定語～＋比較級＋than…と書き換えたり、原級を使って、否定語～＋so(as)＋原級＋as…と書き換えることができます。
Jack is the tallest boy in his class.(最上級)
＝Jack is taller than any other boy in his class.(比較級)
＝No other boy in his class is taller than Jack.(比較級)
＝No other boy in his class is so tall as Jack.(原級)
Nothing is more important than good health.＝Good health is the most important of all.(健康より大切なものはない。)
